Cancun Information

- Quick history on Cancun ...

Cancun comes from the Mayan language; ''kan'' and ''kun'', wich means ''nest of the snake''. Cancun is situated on the eastern part of Mexico, on the Yucatan peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo.

The hotel strip overlooks the beautiful Caribbean sea, clear blue water and white sandy beaches for more than 14 miles, are what make Cancun so popular for tourists all around the world. Cancun is actually one of the top 10 destinations around the world with the most occupation all year round.

Cancun hotel zone started in 1970. The first hotels to see the day in Cancun we're Cancun Hyatt Hotel, Playa Blanca Hotel and Blue Bay Hotel.

- Arriving at the airport ... Beware of timeshare people waiting for you !!

The worst part of your vacation in Cancun is getting from the luggage carousel to your transportation. Make sure you know who your transport is and find them on the outside, obviously this is where they will be waiting. Unless you are looking to buy a timeshare, waste time and money, do NOT stop to talk with anyone to book excursions or tours, they are all trying to put you in a timeshare presentation no matter what they say. There is plenty of time for that after you get settled in. After you clear the red or green light baggage inspection, do not give your bags to any locals offering to carry them. They will demand money to carry them 15 meters.

Don't be fool by people telling you that your transportation as left, and you need to pay a cab and arriving at the hotel they'll (transportation company) pay you back. It's an old old old scam, but still works! So beware.

 - Passport and visa information for entering Mexico : http://www.sre.gob.mx/en/

Upon arrival in Cancun Mexico's airport you will need to present a valid passport plus a visitor’s permit which is now known as the FMM “Forma Migratoria Multiple”. This document is provided free of charge by your travel agent, airline or at point of entry. If you loose it while you are in Cancun, there is a 50$usd fee to replace when you go back at the airport.

- Tips (money) at the hotel.

Even if your travel agency is telling you that everything is included, including tips, that is not absolutely true. Like anywhere in world, bartenders and restaurants staff rely on tips to make a decent living. If your going to an average 3 to 5 stars resort, you should consider leaving 2$ to 3$ (per couple) when you going the hotel's main buffet. If your eating at one of the hotel's reservation restaurant then consider leaving 5$ to 10$ per couple. Obviously this depends totally on the service that is being offered by the staff, and is under your discretion.

When getting drinks at the bar by the beach or at the pool, ask the bartender if he is going to be there all day long, if yes, then 5$ for the day and you'll be treated like kings and queens!

About the staff that cleans the room, 2$ to 3$ per day per room is the average, and again this is based per couple.

For bellboys staff (employee that bring your luggages to your room), the average is 2$ per room.

If your going with kids, and planning to use the mini-club (activity staff for the kids), the average tips is offered after the holidays and is around 20$. Make sure you give it to the employee that really took care of your kids.
